Recreation and Park’s General Manager, Phil Ginsburg led families in a fun game of “Mayor Says…” (aka Simon Says) to get everyone nice and limber for the short walk to school. Also present were Mr. Avila, District 6 Supervisor, Jane Kim, Board of Education President, Hydra Mendoza, and SFMTA Director, Ed Reiskin.

SFPD escorted the walking school bus along with parents who wore safety vests and carried traffic safety signs.
In celebration of International Walk to School day, the Mission’s Marshall Elementary School is pulling out all the stops, with Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor Jane Kim, Marshall Principal Peter Avila, Rec and Park Dept. Director Phil Ginsburg, Walk SF Exec. Director Elizabeth Stampe, SFMTA Exec. Director Ed Reiskin, and Dept. of Public Health Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator Ana Validzic all showing up to encourage students to make a commitment to staying active and walk to school.

All in all, 44 schools across SF will be participating in the day, but Marshall’s the one that is “going to be representing the District for a media event,” the school says on its site.

Though the official walking part of the event begins at 8:10am, parents and students are encouraged to arrive at Kidpower Park (on Hoff Street between 16th and 17th) at around 7:45am for a warmup before hitting the streets.

“Walking school buses” will take students from playground to classroom with prizes and celebrations along the way. The event is sponsored by Walk San Francisco, whose goal is to make SF a more pedestrian-friendly city for all.

“In addition to the central event at Marshall,” says Stampe, “many Supervisors are walking to their districts’ schools.” So keep your eye out for your own elected official Wednesday morning!

What: International Walk to School Day
Where: the walk beings at Kidpower Park on Hoff St, between 16th and 17th and ends at Marshall Elementary School on Capp St. between 16th and 17th.
When: Wednesday, October 5 from 7:45am to 8:40am
Cost: Just a little bit of exercise.

Mayor Ed Lee, Muni executive director Ed Reiskin, and Supervisor Jane Kim will be among several city officials participating in Walk to School Day on Oct. 5.

Overall, 44 city schools will take part in Walk to School Day, an international event aimed at drawing awareness to pedestrian needs and goals. Lee, Kim and Reiskin will all walk to the event’s featured school, Marshall Elementary in the Mission neighborhood.

They’ll be joined by Elizabeth Stampe, executive director of Walk SF, a pedestrian-advocacy organization that successfully lobbied for the implementation of 15 mph speed limits on city streets near schools.

The walk to Marshall will start at 7:45 a.m. at nearby Kidpower Park on Hoff Street, where Recreation and Park executive director Phil Ginsburg will lead some warm up exercises. Lee, Kim and Reiskin are scheduled to arrive at Marshall at 8:30 a.m., where they will each speak at the schoolyard for about 10 minutes.

It can be as simple and informal as several families taking turns walking their children to school, or as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of volunteers. Once you have an informal walking school bus established among several families, you may want to include more members of your community.

For every day that they walk to school, use a hole puncher to punch a shoeprint. When they have walked ten days, give the student a prize! It doesn’t have to be much – a sticker, recognition, a certificate. Anything to keep them motivated and having fun! Download this template and enter your school or teacher’s name to personalize it. Keep using it all year round to encourage walking and biking to/from school!
