Bike to School Day

Save the date: April 12, 2012 is the next Bike to School Day in San Francisco!

Bike to School Day is part of the Encouragement piece of Safe Routes to School. It is an event to encourage all San Francisco students and their families to safety ride to school on one day during the school year.  On May 28th, 2009 approximately 500 students in 25 San Francisco schools biked to school in San Francisco’s first ever citywide Bike to School Day!  In 2011, over 1,500 youth, and nearly 500 adults and volunteers participated in Bike to School Day. In 2010, one thousand students from 32 schools joined over 450 parents and adult volunteers on “Bike Trains” as part of their school commute on Thursday, April 15th, 2010. In support of this effort, the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education stepped forward to endorse the goals of the SF Bike to School Day event and also to state that:

“The Board of Education encourages all of its teachers to engage their students around the benefits of bicycling in the interest of creating the healthiest and safest school and community environments and promoting healthier lifestyles.”

Isn’t it about time we did something FUN, safe and healthy to give back what’s been missing from the school commute for quite some time now?

If the number of kids who walk and bike to school was restored to 1969 levels, our nation would cut 3.2 billion vehicle miles, 1.5 million tons of CO2, and 89,000 tons of other pollutants annually. This is the equivalent of keeping more than 250,000 cars off the road for a year.
